Don Omar
The Last Don LIVE
Release date: June 2004
Recording information: Roberto Clemente Coliseum, Puerto Rico (10/2003). A streetwise mix of salsa, dancehall reggae, and hip-hop, reggaeton has been taking Puerto Rico by storm since the 1990s. With its gritty, urban lyrics and rap delivery, it's tailor-made for sweaty dance clubs in any hemisphere. Though he's only one of several major exponents of the genre, Don Omar has carved out quite a reputation for himself in a short time with his Latin-tinged take on conventional rap subjects, set to an irresistible rhythm. This double-disc live album is both typically explosive and surprisingly subtle, with Puerto Rican-style rap taking its place next to both the accordion-based "The Immigrant" (AKA the theme from THE GODFATHER) and a big-band version of "My Way." While Don Omar's sound may be unfamiliar to American ears, when heard together with a Latin big band in full flight, the insistent rhythms of reggaeton, and an ecstatic crowd, the effect is spectacular.
